One way system brings traffic improvements to Bargoed

21 September 2009

A new one way traffic system is being introduced in Bargoed as part of Caerphilly county borough council’s ongoing works to regenerate the town centre.

New signs are being erected to inform motorists of the change, which comes into operation from 12noon on Monday 21st September. The new one way system will start at the bus station at Hanbury Square, then continues along Hanbury Road and High Street to the new mini roundabout at the entrance to St Gwladys pay and display car park at the northern end of the town

The move will improve traffic flow, ease congestion and allow the width of the road to be reduced so wider pavements can be created for shoppers. A number of loading, parking and disabled bays will also be located along the route.

Cllr Rob Gough, CCBC cabinet member for transportation and planning, said, “Local people will know that Bargoed is undergoing major changes at the moment and the whole town centre is being transformed thanks to our ambitious regeneration works. The investment that has been made in Angel Way has removed the need for much of the traffic through the town centre, providing an opportunity to introduce changes to the shopping centre to make it more pedestrian friendly.”

Proposals for the one way system formed part of a major exhibition which went on display in Bargoed back in March when local people were encouraged to go along and have their say.

The exhibition showed in some detail the public realm improvements planned for the shopping centre and other schemes including the creation of a new bus station, a new public square and the development of pedestrian links between the upper and lower town centre.
