Over 80% of the county borough is countryside. It is a diverse and attractive landscape of upland commons, woodland, farmland and manmade features such as dry stone walls. It is still very important for farming and forestry, it provides an attractive environment for a range of recreational pursuits and is rich in biodiversity.
The council works with landowners, residents and interested groups to help protect and enhance this countryside. Its work is directed by its Countryside Strategy which was produced, and adopted in 1998.
The council has now produced a revised strategy that reflects the changes that have taken place in policy and practice since 1998.
The revised countryside strategy has three main aims;
