Ynys Hywel Farm is a working hill farm, owned by Caerphilly county borough council and run by the Countryside and Landscape Service. Situated in the heart of the Sirhowy Valley Country Park its 112 acres (45 hectares) are home to Welsh Black and Belted Galloway cattle, Badger-faced sheep, Tamworth pigs and a variety of chickens and ducks.
The farm is managed with biodiversity in mind; hedges planted and dry-stone walls rebuilt. Graig Goch woodland a local nature reserve with a springtime bluebell extravaganza is situated next to the farm. Animals from the farm are used to graze land at Aberbargoed Grasslands NNR, Penallta Marshlands and Llancaiach Fawr.
Schools and groups can visit the farm and experience the workings of a real farm where animals are reared for food. Ynys Hywel Farm has a fully equipped education room, toilets, and hand and welly washing facilities. An education pack has been prepared to support a visit to Ynys Hywel Farm.
Please contact the Countryside Service for more information about a visit to Ynys Hywel Farm.
