Departing Heron

This piece is inspired by the birds that often feed within the area, there is a small pool below where the sculpture is located which the herons often frequent, however when you approach the pool they always know that your there and with a leap and their wings spread wide they fly off before you have chance to admire them. This movement of the heron inspired this piece and that movement has been captured by the artist Gideon Peterson.

Past and Present

At the front of the visitor centre you will find another piece of artwork. These three independent panels form a screen that depicts the history of the site over the past 100 years. We have the mining heritage depicted in the minors profile in the left hand panel, the new leisure usage with walkers, cars an mountain bikes on the right hand panel and joining the two is the lower panel depicting nature and wildlife reclaiming the site and living in partnership between the past and present uses.

Located around the lake are a number of animal footprints, which are set into the footpath, can you identify and find the animals hidden in the landscape before they flee or before the wolf finds you? Inspired by the wild animals that have and some that still roam the forest of Cwmcarn, these sculptures have been created and placed within the woodland setting.
