Events in 2012

Our events programme for 2012 is packed more than ever, with an exciting range of talks, games, crafts and activities – from history mysteries to family fun, fascinating talks to the historic winding engine and that’s before we even mention our new exhibition, The Titanic, the Mill and the Signal – Artie Moore and Titanic’s SOS.

And remember, all our events are FREE!

What's coming up this Spring & Summer ?

Music & May Day

Mon, 7th May, 10am-5pm

Celebrate May Day with music and merriment!  Join us on Monday 7th May for a day of fun and games based on the heydey of Edwardian music halls and carnivals. Try your hand at some  magic tricks, pose as a "Strong Man" and find out what music and mischief were enjoyed in the Music Hall on this day of old-fashioned fun! The historic winding engine will run at 12pm and 3pm.

Diamond Decades

Mon 4th June & Tues 5th June, 10am-5pm

Take a trip down memory lane and explore life in South Wales in the last 60 years.  From fashion to music, working life to social life, from the ‘50s to the “noughties” – step through the decades to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The historic winding engine will run on both days at 12pm and 3pm.

"Life, Language & Leisure in the Upper Rhymney Valley before Iron & Coal"      

Saturday 21st July, 2pm

Join us for this fascinating talk on the local area's pre-industrial history by retired university academic, Dr Colin Morgan. Part of the Festival of British Archaeology. BOOKING ESSENTIAL.   

Trowels & Treasure!

 Tuesday 24th - Friday 27th July, 10am-5pm

Discover fabulous finds, mystery objects and curious costumes in a week of special archaeology and history adventures for all ages ! Part of the Festival of British Archaeology.   The historic winding engine will run on Friday 27th July at 12pm and 3pm.

A Month of Fun Days

Thursday 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th August, 2-4pm

Join us every Thursday afternoon in August for some intriguing historical puzzles, crafts, games and activities for families of all ages. No need to book - just drop in and join the fun! 

My Museum!

Monday 13th - Friday 17th August, 11-3pm

A special week of events for young people, aged 9-14 years. Budding curators can take control of the Winding House and discover how museums look after their collections. They’ll pick which objects go on dispay for all our visitors to see – and decide how to display them! BOOKING ESSENTIAL.   Find out about last year's "My Museum" here.

Sports Days & Stadiums

Monday 27th August, 10am-5pm

Celebrate this Olympic summer with a day of sporting fun on August Bank Holiday Monday. Explore games, activities and competitions from the past and discover more about some local sporting heroes! The historic winding engine will run at 12pm and 3pm.

The historic winding engine runs on Bank Holidays and special event days.
