Welsh Language Development

The Caerphilly Early Years team, in partnership with Menter Iaith Caerffili, are able to provide excellent opportunities for childcare practitioners to develop Welsh language skills within their settings.

Support is designed to promote positive attitudes and habits towards language rich environments and can include anything from individual support to being a part of our Welsh Language scheme of work “Ffordd i Ddwyieithrwydd/Road to Bilingualism”.

Assessing Welsh Language Ability

Have you heard of the CWLWM EDI Project?   Working with the National Centre for Learning Welsh, the EDI project aims to establish the Welsh Language ability across the Early Years, Childcare and Play workforce across Wales, with a long-term aim of informing the development of bespoke Welsh Language courses for the sector.

The first part of the project involves a short initial questionnaire, completed either by phone or through Skype and should take around 10 minutes to complete. After this, there are 4 online quizzes (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) that you can choose to complete.

They aren't tests, but you will get a ‘result’ at the end of the quizzes, which will tell you roughly what level you have achieved, mapped to the current Welsh for Adults levels.  The EDI team will receive details of the overall levels achieved - but they won't be able to say who each set of scores belongs to as the data is anonymised by the online system.

If your setting is registered with any of the umbrella organisations (Mudiad Meithrin, Wales PPA, Pacey, NDNA, Clybiau Plant Cymru Kids Clubs), please contact the relevant organisation to note your interest.

If your setting is not registered with any of the umbrella organisations, and are interested in taking part, or would like more information please email edi@meithrin.cymru, and they will get back to you.
