Out-of-School clubs

Registered Out of School clubs are for School-aged children. Activities are planned so that children can relax, learn, and play with their friends. Out of school clubs are usually based in or near schools and are available through the medium of English and Welsh.

There are a variety of Out of School clubs including:

  • Breakfast clubs, where your child can enjoy breakfast and have fun with their friends before school starts.
  • After school clubs which run after school until around 6pm.
  • Before and After clubs which combine the two, opening both in the morning and in the afternoon.
  • Holiday Playschemes which open during the school holidays.

All of these clubs require that children are dropped off and collected by a responsible adult. The clubs then take full responsibility for them until the children are collected. Clubs run a planned programme of activities including arts and crafts, games, sport, drama and music, plus a quiet corner for reading, homework and videos.

Clubs are registered with Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CIW) and are checked to ensure that the staff are suitable to look after children. At least half of them must be trained and depending on the age of the children there are rules on the ratio of staff to children. The inclusion of children with special needs is welcomed and encouraged.

Clubs may be a member of Clybiau Plant Cymru Kid's Clubs, which exists to help communities in Wales by promoting, developing and supporting quality, affordable, accessible childcare clubs.
