Paper facts

Paper and card are the materials that we all throw away
the most, making up over a third of the rubbish we produce.
It is easy to make new paper and card by recycling the old
paper and card.

As a nation, we use paper every day and 12.5 million
tonnes is used each year.

Its a fact...

  • It takes 7 days for a recycled newspaper to come back as a
    newspaper again.
  • 67% of the paper and cardboard used in the UK is recycled
  • 11 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions were avoided by recycling paper and cardboard in 2008, the equivalent of taking around 3½ million cars off the road.

Recycled paper is used to make:

  • All of the newspaper made in the UK is now made from 100% recycled paper
  • Much of our toilet paper is made from recycled paper
  • Corrugated cardboard packaging consists nearly of 100% recycled material
  • If paper is made using recyled materials then it will produce 73% less air pollution than if it was made from raw materials.

Did you know...?

  • It is estimated that for every tonne of paper recycled saves enough energy to power a house in the UK for a whole year!

  • Paper produced from raw material uses far more energy and water than if we recycle our unwanted paper

  • By recycling your daily newspaper you will have saved more than your own body weight in paper within a year!

  • For every tonne of paper used for recycling 17 trees are spared.

  • The average family uses 6 trees worth of paper each year.

  • A forest the size of Wales is needed to supply the paper used in the UK every year!
