Friends & Volunteers

The Winding House has a thriving and enthusiastic Friends and Volunteers group. They support the Winding House in many ways, from fundraising and promotion, to practical help.


Friends & Volunteers Support

The Winding House Friends and Volunteers help to support the museum by:

  • Acting as a supporters' club to generate enthusiasm for the Winding House.
  • Encouraging others to come and enjoy the Winding House and take part in its activities.
  • Helping to raise funds to enhance services and facilities at the Winding House.
  • Having the opportunity to volunteer at the Winding House and helping it to provide enhanced and new services.
  • Contributing to the future growth and success of the Winding House.

 The Friends and Volunteers Committee.


Activities and projects

Friends and Volunteers can get involved in the museum in many different ways. 

As a Friend

 You can:

  • Attend regular social events.
  • Receive invitations to exhibition previews at the Winding House. 
  • Receive a 10% discount in the Winding House Gift Shop and Coffee Shop.
  • Make advance bookings for special Winding House events.
  • Receive a regular newsletter.
  • Contribute to the services and facilities at the Winding House through membership fees.

Friends & Volunteers Social Events

The Friends & Volunteers hold regular fun Quiz Nights.     Last year's annual Friends & Volunteer's trip, which involved a trip along the Brecon Canal.      Friends & Volunteers at a celebration for the museum's sport exhibition, in 2010


As a Volunteer

You can receive all these benefits as well as getting involved in some exciting projects and helping out with all sorts of aspects of the museum:

  • Front of House Team - help welcome and care for our visitors' needs.
  • Events Team - help stage special events for our visitors.
  • Learning Team - help deliver learning sessions and activities for visiting school groups.
  • Collections Management Team - record and document our growing collection of artefacts.
  • Engine Maintenance Team - help care for our winding engine.
  • Research Team - explore and promote the area's heritage.
  • Exhibitions Team - contribute to new displays and exhibitions.

Some of our Volunteers in action

Ashleigh one of the Events Volunteers, who help with activities at the Museum on event days and also help to plan our events programme for the year.   Larry, one of the Engine Volunteers, who meet each Wednesday evening to clean and maintain the historic winding engine. They also run the engine for members of the public on Bank Holidays and special events days.  Liz, one of the Learning Volunteers, who help with the delivery of our education programmes to school groups.  Steve, one of the Engine Volunteers, who meet each Wednesday evening to clean and maintain the historic winding engine. They also run the engine for members of the public on Bank Holidays and special events days.  Hilary, one of the Collections Volunteers, with artefacts from the Museum collection. The Collections Team helps to catalogue objects and photographs from the Collection as well as preparing them for storage and display. Collection Volunteers also help with research for new exhibitions.   Jan, one of the Front of House Volunteers, explaining what there is to see at the Winding House. The Front of House Team help to welcome visitors to the Museum as well as serving in the Coffee Shop and Gift Shop.
